Our Deepest Hurts Can Become Our Biggest Gifts

Sometimes, what we feel called to offer the world can be things that we have loved since we were children. For example, you might have always loved art or animals or flowers and want to share those passions with others.

On the other hand, often our deepest hurts can become our biggest gifts. That has been my experience.

I don’t know if you know this about me, but when I was in my early twenties, I thought I had too many childhood hurts to become a mother. So I decided that I would have at least 10 years of therapy before becoming a mother. Which I did!

I also immersed myself in the world of developmental psychology and psychospiritual psychotherapy, working as both a Research Fellow in infant development and at the same time, training and working as a psychotherapist.

Doing all that inner work and having such a deep understanding of babies and children stood me in good stead in the early years of my parenting. I’d received so much listening around my childhood and so much expressing of my childhood feelings that I had lots of years of capacity to see things from my children’s eyes and meet their needs and listen to their feelings.

And these experiences developed into my becoming an Aware Parenting Instructor.

Another example of our deepest hurts becoming our biggest gifts was around my birthing. I was so completely terrified of giving birth that I needed to, and chose to, put a huge amount of inner work and outer preparation into giving birth.

HypnoBirthing dropped into my lap whilst we were thinking of conceiving my daughter 18 years ago, and I trained in it and then we conceived her.

Whilst I was pregnant with her I also trained in Private Subconscious-mind Healing and went from being terrified of giving birth to having complete and utter trust in my body’s capacity to give birth in harmony with my baby.

So much so that I had a free birth, which was one of the most empowering experiences ever.

Similarly with my son, my P.S.H. training and Calm Birth helped me have another beautiful birthing experience. For a few years I worked as a HB and then Calm Birth instructor, to help other families have empowering birth experiences, which was so important to me because from all my years immersed in pre- and peri-natal psychology, I knew how important birth is in a human’s life journey.

And talking about birth, if we go back to my birth, that was the biggest component of what calls me.

I was 10 weeks premature and in an incubator for the first 5 weeks of my life. My feelings of loss, isolation, fear and terror have been such a huge impetus for me. Understanding how babies feel, their core needs for holding, the importance of listening to their feelings and helping them heal from stress and trauma, and understanding what happens if we don’t do that, guided me towards all my passion in developmental psychology, such as my PhD on the mother-infant relationship and then my love of Aware Parenting.

I have an exquisite sensitivity to the needs and feelings of babies and children, and a passion to help other parents understand these too.

I have a bigger perspective to this. I believe that my soul chose to have that birth experience to awaken me to my calling.

My first experience this lifetime was of separation and terror, and the key of my callings are to help bring more interconnectedness and love into the world.

On a day to day level, my life experiences and my callings are always intertwine.

For example, this morning as I was waking up I did my usual Inner Loving Mother practice, and felt called to imagine little newborn baby Marion being held by my ILM and She said to little me, “I’m always here with you. I’m here to meet your needs. I won’t leave you alone. You won’t need to feel disappointed this time.”

And then, after that, the calling to write this post came to me.

I believe each of us has unique and beautiful callings to share with the world and I’m passionate about supporting women and mothers in particular to feel the deep fulfilment of making a difference in the lives of others through sharing what they’ve learnt in their own lives.
